Improving services and sustainability through better jobs and democracy

Some cities are suited to waterborne public transport, and some of those are experiencing small scale revivals, while in others ferry boats form an important part of the public transport mix.

According to IATP, the potential of waterborne public transport remains under-explored, although it could help to reduce road congestion by providing reliable commuter as well as tourist services.

In fact, good commuter ferry boat services can be very popular with tourists, as any visitor to Istanbul knows well. In New York, the Staten Island ferry from downtown Manhattan operates 24 hours a day all year round, carrying 21 million passengers annually.

Technological change is creating opportunities for solar or hydrogen-based boat services, which might contribute strongly to development of commuter services.
